What it takes to work with DJ Premier
Why consistency beats talent
How to turn presence into opportunity
Early Roots: Finding Music Through Curiosity
Nef didn’t come up through the typical path.
He wasn’t just a fan of hip-hop trying to make beats—he was drawn to the idea of manipulating sound.
He grew up around music, but what clicked was seeing someone scratch records and reshape what already existed.
“The music was already there—but I could make it my own.”
That curiosity turned into obsession.
Learning the Hard Way
Early on, nothing was polished.
No loops
No guidance
No structure
Just trial and error.
At one point, Nef made 300 beats before keeping one.
“I made like 300 beats before I kept one.”
That process built the foundation—not shortcuts, not tutorials.
Hardware, Discipline, and Respect for the Craft
While others were moving into digital production, Nef was deep in hardware:
MPCs
Turntables
Rack gear
Floppy disks
That hands-on approach created something important:
Respect for the process.
It wasn’t just about making beats—it was about understanding them.
The Move That Changed Everything
At 26, Nef made the decision to move to New York.
No real connections.
No safety net.
Just a commitment.
“I can’t be 45 and say I never tried.”
What changed wasn’t just location—it was access.
Instead of sending beats online and waiting, he started:
Going to shows
Meeting people
Being present
How He Linked with Statik Selektah
This wasn’t luck.
Nef:
Took advice seriously
Showed up consistently
Followed through
Eventually, that turned into studio access.
The turning point?
Cleaning the studio.
“I added value to his life.”
That’s the difference:
Don’t ask for opportunities—be useful first.
From Engineer to Trusted Collaborator
By staying consistent, Nef went from:
👉 Observer → Engineer → Collaborator
He learned everything by being in the room:
Mixing
Sessions
Workflow
Industry standards
No shortcuts—just proximity and repetition.
Working with DJ Premier
Nef didn’t approach Premier like a fan trying to get on.
He built a relationship first.
Over time:
Premier started playing his records
Gave him opportunities
Brought him into sessions
Then came a key moment:
“You’re supposed to call me every day.”
That’s when things shifted.
Consistency builds trust.
Touring with DJ Premier & Alchemist
One of the biggest milestones:
6-week international tour
29 cities
Tour manager role
Nef wasn’t just there—he was responsible for everything:
Scheduling
Logistics
Communication
Keeping everything running
“You’re parenting four grown men.”
This level of trust only comes from years of reliability.
Bass & Bars with Brady Watt
Nef is also a core part of Bass & Bars.
His role:
Recording audio
Mixing & mastering
Maintaining quality
The setup is simple but effective:
Tight team
Consistent output
High production value
And it continues to grow.
The Shift to Singles
Despite his old-school background, Nef adapted.
Instead of focusing on albums, he’s now prioritizing:
Singles
Consistency
Release timing
“It’s not just consistency—it’s when and how you drop.”
Each release becomes:
Content
Clips
Extended reach
Key Takeaways
1. Be where things happen
Online helps, but real-world presence matters more.
2. Add value first
Opportunities follow usefulness.
3. Stay consistent
That’s what builds trust.
4. Adapt to the current landscape
Old-school foundation, modern execution.
5. Relationships matter most
Every major opportunity came from people.
Final Thought
Nef’s story isn’t about shortcuts.
It’s about:
Showing up
Staying ready
Doing the work
Over time, that turned into:
Working with legends
Touring internationally
Building a real career
